Opening Copies 2018-19

2019 copy in full, Followed by visuals

You know how hard it is to open up. Think about it.

It’s hard to stay true to yourself in a society so quick to judge. “Did you see what they posted?”

Social media makes it “effortless” to connect, “just press <3 and comment, “go off!”

But in reality, is your media presence really YOU?

Sometimes, it’s not even worth it to let your guard down or make yourself vulnerable.

You know the courage it takes to set a new fashion trend.

You know how you overthink what you are wearing. “Is it too showy?” “Do I look fat?” “Is it too weird from the mainstream clothes?”

What will people think of you? Will they see you the way you want?

Does that anxiousness follow you into the classroom?

You know how it goes... It’s the first week of school and the teacher calls on you in a Socratic seminar. You answer, and then the worst happens. Eye rolls, whispers, laughs.

So you play it safe, keep your head down, earbuds in, hoodie up.

But what would happen if you took your hood down? Imagine what you could see. Imagine what you could say.

When you’re finally ready to let others hear your thoughts about climate change, the album that dropped last week, or the 50th fast food restaurant to open in GB, you could change the world.

Opening copy is not just the front part of our book. To us, we take pride in how we organize our theme. We use the theme to guide our interviews, designs, photos and stories.

This means that the opening copy is one of the most important parts of the book. We have to write it so that the readers can understand what our book is about and why we did what we did.

When writing the opening copy, I look for things that are specific to Grand Blanc schools/community.

Copy Methods

Best of Copy

This is a method I use to motivate staffers. After each deadline, I look through the copies to find the best caption, lead, subhaed, headline, and story. Once they are found, I put them on the google slide to present in front of the class.

How to Yearbook

Our staff uses a website called Trello to organize our spreads. At the beginning of the year we share a list of things that can help the staffers write. My partner copy editor and I have made these documents.

Every other Wednesday, I know that I have to commit to 2-3 hours of copy editing after school.

This is an example of the copy editing technique. The staffers create a "copy skeleton" to write their stories on. This organizes their pages so it is easy to correct and input on indesign. I put on "suggestions" to help them see what they need work on.

This is an example of a copy skeleton. This is a blank work sheet that the staffers can fill out for their deadlines.

I made this so then when I copy edit, it is easier to read and follow because it is so organized.

This is a picture of a proof that I edited. Before the pages get shipped, I read the whole spread to correct for grammar and spelling issues that weren't caught before.

Accomplishments

GB Living

Magazine Work

GB Living is a community magazine that features stories that are relevant to the present. The editors ask our staff to write stories for them at times and I have wrote for them twice.

MIPA

The theme of the 2019 book was one more thing. This was awarded first place at the MIPA award ceremony in Lansing.
